Welcome to my Social Studies Class! I love history and hope to inspire you to learn about the interesting ancient civilizations we’ll be exploring. How did geography and religion shape lives? What kind of laws and government did they have? What technological advances were made? How are these civilizations similar and how do they differ? How/why did these civilizations rise and fall? How have these civilizations impacted the lives of people around the world today? We will be using TCI Social Studies this year. The program focuses on the following themes: Human-Environment Interaction •Disease, population growth, migration, patterns of human settlement Rise of Civilizations •Trade networks, written language, art and architectural advancements, unification, prominence of patriarchal societies Growth and Changes in Societies •Gender roles, customs relating to family and kinship, racial and ethnic differences and their impact on society, division of society into social and economic classes Development of Political Institutions and Ideas •Forms of government, nature and growth of city-states and civilizations, political revolts and revolutions Belief Systems •Focus on religion and its impact on societies Interconnectedness of Societies •Exchange of inventions and products, spread of religions and arts, migration of people to new locations, diplomacy among societies Otzi the Iceman * Cool Websites: Mummy Tombs South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology National Geographic Please come to class prepared to discover ancient world history by bringing your notebook and folder (often left in the classroom for your convenience), a pencil, your assignment pad, current assignments, respectable behavior and motivation. We will be taking notes, doing research, working on projects and presentations, making and reading maps, and incorporating writing tasks into each unit. You will learn a lot! |
